What does a food manager do and how can they improve food safety?
According to data from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, over a 10-year period (2003-2012), there were a total of 44 foodborne illness outbreaks. And the two most common pathogens found were Campylobacter and Salmonella —both preventable with the right food safety protocols in place.
Preventing foodborne illness is something everyone at your restaurant is responsible for—but it’s especially important for food safety managers because it impacts so many areas of their jobs. For instance, they are in charge of:
- Managing the food safety program through HACCP education and awareness
- Keeping all food, from frozen to fresh, at the right temperature
- Educating employees on food safety protocols, policies, and procedures
Since they typically have more responsibilities, food managers can make more money than servers and other food employees. According to wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, here is the average amount of money you can expect to make in senior management positions in the Utah foodservice industry:
Job Title | Average Hourly Wage | Average Yearly Wage |
---|---|---|
Food Service Manager | $22.13 | $46,030 |
Chef | $20.96 | $43,590 |
Getting a Utah-approved food safety manager certification could potentially put you ahead of someone who doesn’t have one when you are competing for one of these jobs.
