What are the Vermont food safety regulations?

Under the Vermont Health Regulations for Food Service Establishments, there must be a person in charge present at the food establishment any time it’s open. This can be the licensee, which is typically the owner, but it can also be someone they designate.

Whoever it is, this person must be able to show that they understand the risks that foodborne illnesses pose to food establishments, how to apply HACCP principles, and the requirements stated in the regulations.

There are two ways the person in charge can demonstrate their knowledge:

  1. Respond correctly to the inspector's questions as they relate to the specific food operation.
  2. Being a certified food protection manager who has shown proficiency in the required information through passing a test that is part of an accredited program.

If you decide to choose option two, you can take our Certified Food Protection Manager exam because it is an ANSI-CFP accredited program.

How long is the food manager certification good for?

If you take our exam to get your food manager certification, it’s good for five years. After that, you’ll need to pass the exam again to get re-certified.

Can you take the Vermont food manager exam online?

Yes, your exam will be administered through our online proctor service. The Learn2Serve Food Protection Manager Certification Exam is accredited by the American National Standards Institute and the Conference for Food Protection (ANSI-CFP).

What can food managers improve food safety?

Since food managers in Vermont can have many different job titles, they have a host of responsibilities that include everything from people managing to customer service. However, the one thing every food manager has in common, no matter their job title, is food safety.

Foodborne illness is a serious danger throughout the United States, including Vermont. According to data from the Center for Science in the Public Interest, over a 10-year period (2003-2012), there were a total of 22 foodborne illness outbreaks. And the two most common pathogens found were Salmonella and Campylobacter—both preventable with the right food safety protocols in place.

How much money do food managers in Vermont make?

As we stated above, food managers have several different job titles and responsibilities. But to give you an idea, here is some wage data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, that shows the average amount of money you can expect to make in senior management positions in the Vermont foodservice industry:

Job Title  Average Hourly Wage  Average Yearly Wage
Food Service Manager  $26.38  $54,870
Chef  $19.48  $40,510

Vermont-approved food safety manager certification is an important qualification for getting one of these jobs.
